Residents of long standing have been lobbying RCC about this for years. On Tuesday 25th November 2024 RCC and Leicestershire & Rutland Fire Service emergency teams attended flooded houses in the village, a significant reason for which was leaves blocking the drains. This issue needs addressing now, and any future development must be preceded by a thorough inspection of the drains and flood risk.

Developers must be encouraged to break the cycle of working in ways that make them feel comfortable. For example -Start using the landscape topography to manage flooding naturally.
Managing rain where it lands - growing roofs, rainwater gardens, wetland ponds, permeable pedestrian paving.
Moving away from the traditional "End of Pipe SuDs" Massive pipes emptying in to a deep hole at the bottom of the site, which subsequently becomes polluted and can affect biodiversity. Sadly these often become part of the "Open Space" on a development.

Additional infrastructure of hard surface area would only increase potential flood water which is already a major issue in the high street where several houses have again recently been flooded.
In regard to Potential Wind Turbine areas and Solar panel areas on high ground around the village - the main concern is for any additional hard surface area draining down into the village. And also the risk of bird strikes to migratory birds flying over to the Eyebrook reservoir.

AWS continues to advise that the current WCS and SFRA (published in October 2023) should be updated to be a full Integrated Water Management Study. AWS considers that the SFRA should include the methodology and inputs from the soon to be updated national EA flood modelling, for example on including surface water flows and new climate change allowances.

As we have previously commented in response to Regulation 18, we note that Policy CC14 of the local plan sets out the Council’s requirements of ensuring new development does not increase the risk of flooding. In doing so we note that the policy remains to allow for discharging surface water to highway drains. However, it should be noted that this would not be permitted with respect to the SRN (with reference to DfT Circular 01/2022 paragraph 59).
